August saw plugin EVs take 20.6% share in Germany, down from (an outlier) 37.0% share YoY. BEVs are now around the level they were in 2022, but PHEV share has halved since then. Overall auto volume was 197,322 units, down some 28% YoY, and far below 2015–2019 seasonal norms (~273,000 units). The bestselling BEV in August was the Tesla Model Y. The August auto market saw combined EVs take 20.6% share in Germany, with full electric vehicles (BEVs) at 13.7% share and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 6.9%. These compare with (anomalous) YoY figures of 37.0% combined, 31.7% BEV and 5.3% PHEV. The August 2023 market was distorted by a huge pull-forward of BEV sales ahead of the incentive cancellation for commercial buyers from September.

July’s overall auto volume was 238,263 units, down 2% YoY, and down around 23% from 2017–2019 seasonal norms (~310,000 units). The best selling BEV in July was the Tesla Model Y.

Overall auto volume was 297,329 units, up by some 6% YoY, but still at least 10% below 2017–2019 seasonal norms (~330,000 units). The bestselling BEV in June was again the Volkswagen ID.3. The market saw combined EVs take 19.8% share in Germany, with full electrics (BEVs) at 14.6% and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 5.2% share. These compare with YoY figures of 24.6% combined, with 18.9% BEV and 5.7% PHEV.

BEVs were down some 31% in YoY volume, while PHEVs were up 2%. Overall auto volume was 236,413 units, down 4% YoY, and down 27% from 2017–2019 seasonal norms (~325,000 units). The best selling BEV in May was the Volkswagen ID.3. May’s sales figures saw combined EVs at 18.5% share, with full electrics (BEVs) at 12.6% and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 5.9% share. These compare with YoY figures of 22.9% combined, with 17.3% BEV and 5.6% PHEV.

April saw plugin EVs take an 18.4% share in Germany, down YoY from 20.5% — still reeling after the abrupt cancellation of incentive schemes in late December. Overall auto volume was 243,087 units, up by some 20% YoY, but still 20% below 2017–2019 seasonal norms (~305,000 units). The bestselling BEV in April was the Volkswagen ID.4. BEV sales remain weak, in a hangover from the unexpected and abrupt cancellation of eco-bonus purchase incentives in mid December 2023. In an overall auto market that grew in volume by some 20% YoY, BEV sales volume was essentially flat YoY, at 29,668 units.

BEVs were down some 29% in YoY volume, while PHEVs were down 4.5%. Overall auto volume was 263,844 units, down 6% YoY, and down 25% from 2017-2019 seasonal norms (~350,000 units). The best selling BEV was the Tesla Model Y. The market data saw combined EVs at 18.0% share, with full electrics (BEVs) at 11.9% and plugin hybrids (PHEVs) at 6.1% share. These compare with 21.6% combined, with 15.7% BEV, and 6.0% PHEV, year on year.

Full electrics grew their share at a decent rate, up from 14.4% to 18.9%, the share of plugin hybrids halved, however, after incentives were cut. Overall auto volume was 280,047 units, up 24.7% YoY, still far down on the pre-2020 norm (roughly 330,000). The Tesla Model Y was the best selling BEV in June, and third best seller of any auto.

Full electrics, however, saw increased share, though were outweighed by a halving of plugin hybrid share, a result of recent policy adjustments. Overall auto volume in April was 202,947 units, 12.6% up YoY, though still one third below pre-2020 seasonal norms (around 305,000 units). The bestselling full electric in April was the Volkswagen ID.4 / ID.5.

Overall auto volume was 281,361 units, up over 16% YoY, but still well down from pre-2020 seasonal norms. March’s combined plugin share of 21.6% comprised 15.7% full electrics (BEVs), and 6.0% plugin hybrids (PHEVs). These shares compare with corresponding YoY figures of 25.6%, 14.3%, and 11.3%.

Germany, Europe’s single largest auto market, saw plugin electric vehicles take 21.5% share of sales in February 2023, a drop from 24.9% year on year. Full electric share grew, but plugin hybrid share almost halved. Overall auto volume was 206,210 units, up by some 3% YoY, but still some 18% down from pre-2020 seasonal norms. The Tesla Model Y was the month’s bestselling plugin, and second overall auto (behind the VW Golf).

The one-off low result comes in the shadow of record plugin share in December, ahead of reduced incentives from January 1st; the imbalance will normalise in the coming months. Overall auto volumes were 179,225 units, just 2% lower than January 2022, though still well down from pre-Covid seasonal norms. The best selling BEV was the Tesla Model Y.
