Notice that the prices in this article are for the more popular hatchback body style, but the all-electric new FIAT 500 is also available in more expensive versions with a cabrio and a 3+1 body.

New FIAT 500 3+1

Anyway, the cheapest variant (Action) seems aimed to be an alternative to the Renault Twingo ZE, while the other more expensive variants seem aimed to be alternatives to the BMW i3. If the waiting time isn’t very long, the new FIAT 500 can be a successful electric car in Europe.

I wonder if FIAT will offer as good discounts as Renault does for its electric cars. What do you think?

My interest in electric transportation is mostly political. Iโ€™m tired of coups and wars for oil. My expectation is that the adoption of electric transportation will be a factor for peace and democracy all over the world.

323 km / 200 miles from 42 kWh is pretty impressive efficiency – up there with Ioniq (albeit a smaller vehicle).

With that level of efficiency, charging at 85 kW will add plenty of range in a 20 or 30 minute pit-stop. This could function as an only-car-you-need for drivers who only very occasional make longer trips, and also work for once-per-week DC fast charging for owners who have no access to a regular AC outlet.

FCA have come a long way since Marchionne’s trashing of BEVs!

The 2021 base model has less power & a smaller battery than my relatively ancient 7-year-old base-model 500e, which is readily available used here for less than 25% of the cost.

Admittedly, my range is less, at “only” about 2.5 times the average US daily drive. Also, its charger is “only” the same speed as all the public L2 chargers here (so the new one would be no faster).

Seriously, the only advantage I see is it has fast charge*, & looks to be available as a cabriolet (Is that what was meant by “coupe”?). Oh! Better efficiency means it will recharge even more miles from a wall outlet while sleeping or working, for those with above-average commutes.

*In over 5 years I’ve never wanted that, but I agree with Max that it would expand the usefulness for others, especially on the higher-range, faster-DC model.

The problem with generation one of the electric 500 is that it was only officialy available in California (and other Carb states?)…. In europe to get one, its grey import with all the hassles to import and big problems when some issue occurs as there are no replacement parts from FCA…. This is essentially a 500E to Europe…. the second most afforrdable version, is a big upgrade to the previous version… and the Cabrio for me the icing on the cake…. i just don’t like its price… but all 500 are quite expensive for the car they are…. it’s like semi-premium….whatever this is…

      • Tom Houlden says:

Ya. Equally accurate for me to say I LOVE my 1st-gen base 500e, & now it’s available in Europe*, with even more range & efficiency, DC charging, & cabrio option. Just too bad the price is still just as high.

*Assuming equal acceleration if other factors compensate for the lower power motor

Does anyone have information about 2021 production levels?
Did they increase plans or still around 80k?
