Citroën unveils the all-electric ë-C4

The PSA Group launches another electric car built on the new e-CMP platform, the Citroën ë-C4.

New ë-C4 – 100% ëlectric has an efficient engine with zero COemissions and a WLTP cycle range of 350 kmi. In addition to the pleasure of driving 100% electric, with no CO2 emissions and real savings in use, New ë-C4 – 100% ëlectric allows access to the restricted traffic areas of cities, which are increasingly off-limits to conventional engine vehicles.

This 100% electric engine is particularly powerful and energetic, whatever the circumstances, with 136 hp of power, 260 Nm of torque instantly available for clean, linear acceleration, 0-100 km/h in 9.7 seconds in Sport mode and a top speed of 150 km/h. The 50 kWh electric motor battery is high-voltage 400 V Li-Ion.

New ë-C4 – 100% ëlectric has a Brake feature that amplifies deceleration of the vehicle without pressing the brake pedal, to increase range. This system allows recovery of the energy available during braking and deceleration phases, unlike the conventional ICE versions. This action lets the driver partially recharge the battery and increase range.

Several driving modes are available, activated by the mode selector on the centre console: Eco, Normal or Sport, which acts on various parameters including air conditioning and effective power and performance, allowing the driver to choose between dynamism or optimal eco-driving.

For even greater peace of mind, the battery is guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 km for 70% of its charge capacity.



Charge time is optimised:

–  In mode 4 on a public charging station, using a 100 kW fast-charge charger, the battery recharges at a rate of 10 km/min, a value at the best level in the segment80% of the charge is completed in 30 min.

–  In mode 3 at home, on a 32 A Wall Box either purchased or rented, battery recharging is accelerated and takes 7.5 hours in single-phase, or even 5 hours in three-phase with the optional 11 kW charger.

–  In mode 2 at home, for occasional needs, the battery can be recharged in 15 hours on a 16 A Legrand Green’up™ type socket and more than 24 hours on a standard domestic socket.

To make life easier for customers and enable them to enjoy their electric vehicle with faster charging times on a daily basis, Citroën takes care of everything and offers a “one-stop shop” solution for installing a Wall Box at home.

Charging is simplified and can be programmed or deferred, to benefit from more advantageous off-peak electricity prices for example. Customers program the vehicle charge using the tablet in the passenger compartment or using the My Citroën app. Charging is simple thanks to improved ergonomics of the flap and the charging cables stored on the hinged boot floor. The charging flap features a colour code to visually track the charging process, which can also be viewed on the My Citroën app.

  • Domestic socket: between 15 hours (high-power socket) and more than 24 hours (standard socket)


It’s a good sign when my main problem with the new PSA electric cars is that they have the charging port on the wrong side.

So far, it seems that the Citroën ë-C4, which gets a WLTP range of 350 km (217 miles) from a 50 kWh battery is the most efficient car built on the new e-CMP platform. For example, with the same powertrain we have:

  • DS 3 Crossback E-Tense: 320 km (199 miles)
  • Peugeot e-2008: 320 km (199 miles)
  • Opel Mokka-e: 322 km (200 miles)
  • Peugeot e-208: 340 km (211 miles)
  • Opel Corsa-e: 337 km (209 miles)


First deliveries are scheduled for early 2021, with price and availability still unknown.

My interest in electric transportation is mostly political. I’m tired of coups and wars for oil. My expectation is that the adoption of electric transportation will be a factor for peace and democracy all over the world.

The range is interesting, 217 miles vs 199 miles for the e-2008 (which presumably has similar weight and dimensions). All down to better cx aerodinamics? Quite impressive, as I like the 100kw charging capability of the PSA models.

If so, this means aero for remaining PSA “smaller brothers” is really poor… Bjorn Nyland even compared DS with Etron in terms of consumption….OMG!!
They really must upgrade their windtunnel performance…

You’d think they would realise that it is all about aero. They seem to still be stuck with the fake grille. I didn’t see it here but wonder if Citroen will keep the hydro-pneumatic suspension. Something to make it stand out from the market, which I think will be more important into the future.

If Height >= 1.525 mm and is a 5 door vehicle, then its a crossover.
300 km range is good.
Now the prices are the big factor.
For a while Peugeot will be a compliance car maker, slowly they will ramp up production by decreasing the price.

The drivetrain they use is by now renowned for its poor efficiency. At 120 km/h I doubt you even get 200 km range, so on longer trips you can do 150 km hops max, or you need to drastically lower your speed. For a car this size, that is simply not enough.

PSA needs to get their act together and increase drivetrain efficiency and battery capacity. Issuing a C-class car with a 45 kW net battery capacity is an utter mistake or a clear indication that PSA do not want to sell EVs than can actually compete in usability with ICE engines. Put in a 60 kWh battery and improve efficiency so you can get a 300-350 km range at motorway speeds, and I’ll start to take them seriously.

They use the same drive train for all their vehicles, even the small commercial vans have the same drive train and a choice between two batteries, the one with 50 kWh and one with 75 kWh. The platform they use does not have enough space to put a larger battery in. They probably have to develop a BEV platform first.

Personally I prefer the driver side charge port. I’m generally plugging in at home where it doesn’t matter, or at a rapid charger where it saves me the walk around the car. I’ve an Ioniq and an e-Up so have charge ports on either side.

The Ioniq is easier for on street charging (passenger side port), but I vary rarely do that anyway.

I think the top picture really nicely illustrates why the charging port should be at the front. If the car had the charging port at the front, either in the middle like the Renault Zoe or at the side like the Audi e-tron you could do with a considerably shorter cable.
