PARIS, France – Nissan has confirmed the evolution of the highly successful LEAF electric vehicle (EV) by announcing two versions of the LEAF 3.ZERO. This new offer will broaden the appeal of EVs to more customers, and both models are ready to order from January 9, 2019.

Following a record-breaking year for Nissan electric vehicles, LEAF 3.ZERO brings to Europe’s best-selling electric vehicle an 8-inch infotainment screen enabling additional connectivity services such as door-to-door navigation. An all-new and improved NissanConnect EV app will also be available when the LEAF 3.ZERO goes on sale in Europe.

The LEAF 3.ZERO features the 40 kWh battery which had great success in 2018. New body colours and two-tone colour combinations will complete the choices. Customers can place their orders for LEAF 3.ZERO from now.

The Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will also be available to order from January 9 across European markets. This limited edition – of which only 5,000 units will be produced for Europe – will feature a higher output capable of delivering 160 kW (217 PS) and longer range capabilities with expected driving range of up to 385 km* from a single charge.

The LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition was announced in Japan and is present at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, this week. Both equally appealing ownership propositions, the current Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO and the LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition uphold the LEAF’s status as the icon of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision.

At the centre of the LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition is an Intelligent Power-enhanced battery. It has 25% more density and a 55% increase in energy storage capacity. Through innovative design and clever engineering, the new higher-power battery contains 288 cells compared to the 192 found in the 40 kWh equivalent.

On the road, the LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition 62 kWH battery will deliver a 40% range increase over the LEAF 3.ZERO which is equipped with a 40 kWh battery. This represents more than an additional range of 100km for a comparable usage, a clear evolution of the LEAF.

The LEAF 3.ZERO models will feature both e-Pedal and ProPILOT. These critically acclaimed Intelligent Driving technologies are transforming the driving experience.

The e-Pedal is a new driving sensation for many, allowing the driver to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop using only the accelerator pedal. This delivers a seamless, smooth drive and maximum control to the driver through enhanced pedal feedback.

ProPILOT is an advanced driving assistance technology which works on single-lane highways. A ‘hands-on, eyes-on’ system, it allows the car to stop, restart and stay centred in its lane in higher-speed cruising and lower-speed congested traffic scenarios. The technology reduces driving stress and fatigue, enhancing driver confidence behind the wheel.

For exceptional customer confidence, the LEAF 3.ZERO and LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition batteries come with the same eight-year/160,000 km Nissan warranty enjoyed by all other versions of the LEAF.

The launch of the Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO follows a historically strong year for Nissan electric vehicles, with the new LEAF performing particularly well. The new LEAF has been the highest selling EV in Europe for 2018, with over 39.000 cars sold across the continent. The LEAF remains the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, with more than 380,000 units sold globally since the original car launched in 2010.

The LEAF 3.ZERO price starts at 39.900€, while the LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will be available for sale from 45.500€**.

European customers wanting to order either model can register their interest online from the 9 January 2019 or visit one of Nissan’s 2,000 retailers in Europe.

First deliveries of the LEAF 3.ZERO are expected to start from May 2019, while initial customer deliveries of the LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will commence from summer 2019.

LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition

  • Price: 45.500 €
  • Range: 385 km/239 miles (WLTP) and 364 km/226 miles (EPA)
  • Battery: 62 kWh (288 cells)
  • Quick Charging: 70 kW (100 kW peak)
  • Motor (power and torque): 160 kW (217 PS) and 340 Nm
  • First deliveries (Europe): Summer 2019 (only 5.000 units for Europe)

 

Regarding the battery cell manufacturer and TMS we still don’t have official information, however we do have this statement from Nissan:

Even with a 25 percent increase in energy density and the increase in energy storage capacity, the LEAF e+ battery pack is almost the same size and configuration as the pack in the Nissan LEAF. Other than a 5-millimeter increase in overall height (16-inch wheels), the car’s exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged.

 

Anyway, both models can be ordered from this moment and first units of the e-Plus will arrive this month in Japan, following USA in spring and finally Europe in the summer.

As expected the longer range and faster model is currently aimed for the USA and will probably outsell the basic model. While in Europe we only get a limited edition (5.000 units) for now. However, I do expect that in late 2019 Nissan will say that the e-Plus far exceeded expectations in Europe and the limited edition will be replaced by a mainstream model more adapted to the European market (with CCS and 3-phase charging), just in time to compete with the Volkswagen Neo. Want to bet?

  1. The leaf II also started with a limited edition, IIRC. Just like the Tesla founders series.
    It did not translate to no wide availability of the Leaf II once production got under way.

    I expect the same to happen here.
    What worries me is the capacity in Sunderland and the competition for production with the Qhasqai.

Si no me equivoco las baterías de 62Kwh són sin refrigeración liquida, es pasiva es algo que me deja KO literalmente, Nissan la a vuelto a hacer…….y esos ¡¡¡45.500!!!euros me dejan atonitos sin palabras ¿Pedro Lima el precio no estara equivocado?. Si no me equivoco aquí en Europa el Model 3 de gama más alta saldra por ese precio y le da 1.000 vueltas a este Leaf en practicamente todo. Lo de Nissan es para, hacerselo mirar. Otro dato es que al parecer Nissan garantiza la batería 160.000km o 8 años……pero ¡¡¡Ojo!!! hasta que esta no llegue al 65% de la capacidad inicial y mirandola ellos a su manera, llamar a esto garantía es mucho llamar…….

      This is the price of a limited edition. When the real competition arrives to Europe (Tesla Model 3 and VW Neo) prices will be adjusted.

    Do u have any more info about the new battery chemistry ? Is it an NCM 811 ?
    It would be fine to have more details on it, especially if this new battery has not TMS …

  4. LG CHEM NCM811?

    1. Low cobalt-content battery cells such as NCA or NCM 811 need a really good cooling system. From the battery photos I don’t see any TMS, it looks like NCM 622 cells. However I do hope that Nissan put at least a fan somewhere like they did for their electric van e-NV200.

    1. Without a TMS the BMS will have to do all the work to extend the life expectancy of the battery. However, since the battery warranty is still 160.000 km and the range has increased, a lot less charge/discharge cycles are required to reach this figure, so it’s feasible.

      Anyway, I see electric cars without TMS as examples of planned obsolescence, it’s just unnecessary battery degradation. 160.000 km is fine, but with a TMS the battery would last much longer.

      Having this said, I still think that the Nissan LEAF is one of the most reliable cars on sale.

  7. The price seems really high if it’s going to compete with the Bolt and the VW Neo, and if it’s passively cooled the e-Niro makes way more sense for the same money.

    1. +1 I’m very disappointed! Will have to wait for an Ionig with a bigger battery or the VW Neo. Well, Dutch government incentive of 6000 euro’s is planned for 2021 so time enough to wait…

  9. So the price of LEAF 3.ZERO (40kWh) is going to be higher than the current Leaf in Portugal?
    They mention 39.900€ but they don’t have any asterisk for that, like they have for the LEAF 3.ZERO e+ in the press release. If that’s the case it’s more expensive than the current one and the few new features it has doesn’t seem to justify the price jump. What do you think, Pedro?

    1. I don’t know, but I’m eager to see the Nissan LEAF vs Volkswagen Neo in Europe. Volkswagen already confirmed that the entry-level 48 kWh version will be priced below 29.000 euros. Therefore Nissan won’t sell the LEAF at that now advertised price after incentives and discounts.

      1. If VW starts with full spec Neo, the lower priced won’t be available before mid 2020.

      1. Insideevs also posted a video of battery construction, and there are also now pictures of the battery, and it appears there’s no air channels or any fans, it’s still a purely passive system.

  10. I was a „fan“…i could not see any sign of ventilation or cooling conection on the case.

    Why did they stop the switch to LG?

      1. If these are AESC cells and they’re apparently denser and more heat resistant, do you think they’ve found a new chemistry or construction for them? Nissan have been investing in battery tech companies, so maybe they found one of those electrolytes or coatings that prevent dendrites forming, and they’ve applied it to these batteries.

        They’re all packed in horizontally now, so they must be somewhat confident that they can survive heat well enough to outlast the warranty.

  11. Interesting question is, will Nissan change the 40 kWh to the new pack design too? That would leave more free space and improve cooling.

    1. yes, interesting question. Are these new cells much improved on the 40kwh versions? Do they cost more? What would it take for Nissan to switch all versions to these cells?

  15. I am a little bit sceptic about a increase of 25% on energy density on the cell.
    Indeed the current cell has a energy density at 224Wh/kg, 25% of increase mean 280Wh/kg.
    This value seems very high for a NMC pouch, even if AESC use NMC811 technology.
    My assumption is that the cell has a energy density around 260Wh/kg.
