Nissan Leaf now without entry-level Visia trim

At least in Portugal, Spain and France you can no longer order the entry-level Visia of the Nissan Leaf.

With fewer trim levels to choose from, production complexity and costs are reduced. No need to waste time and resources to produce a trim level that customers don’t want. Acenta has always been the most popular trim level on the Nissan Leaf and it’s now the entry-level trim.

I see this as good news, furthermore Nissan is not only adjusting the trim levels, but also the prices. Let’s see the evolution in Portugal.

Considering that Nissan is about to discontinue Leaf’s gas counterpart (the Pulsar), the Leaf will be alone in this segment. Nissan seems now focused in making this model a success, even before the arrival of the long-range version – that’s coming next year.

  2. I saw this change some days ago by chance. I don’t think that version would be very successful, it had many features removed.
    Speaking of the Leaf, do you think this 2018 version is worth it or it’s better to wait some months for the 2019 version? I live in Portugal so i’m a bit apprehensive about the battery thermal management situation. What do you think?

    1. I think that 30.000 € is too much for an electric car without a TMS, either it be a Nissan Leaf or a Volkswagen e-Golf.

      The problem with the long-range version is that it’s a 2019 model year, it can be launched this year or the next, we don’t know for sure.

      1. Right, to me also seems a bit pricey considering the lack of TMS.
        On the other hand, the 2019 version seems very interesting, as Blue mentioned, however besides the availability, another downside might be the price. Probably won’t be near the 30.000 € mark and more close to the 40.000€.

        However in 2019 there might be more alternatives, right? I remember you mentioned that Peugeot 208 will have an electric version next year. That sounded interesting, but i’m not sure if it’ll really arrive next year. I guess part of it depends on the model 3, because it seems like the only car pushing the electric market now.

    There is hope of 11 kw ac, more punch and more dc charging speed. Ccs?

    And maybe the first time a useable 60 kwh battery and not a 38 kwh one

    Visia seems to have been cut in Estonia as well, so now the Leaf prices start with 35 900 € for the Acenta trim.

  6. The prices haven’t gone down here in the UK the base acenta is now £2,000 apparently more expensive. It was just over £23k a couple of months ago.

  7. 2018 Prices here in Ontario are quite a bit higher than the outgoing 2017. Leasing terms are also a lot higher. This might have something to do with the US-Canada exchange rate though.

    And dealers are listing the few Leafs they have for over MSRP, so there seems to be a supply issue. Very few new Leaf listings on Autotrader.ca. I wonder if Nissan is having trouble producing them, or if they’re shipping them to their new markets instead of NA?

    The Chevy Bolt here in Canada also has an 8-12 month wait time, which also points to a supply constraint. Basically all EVs seem hard to get!

    If I was choosing now and had time to wait, I’d probably go for an Ioniq with heat pump ($36,800) over the Leaf SV with heat pump ($39,500)

    1. Marcel – Here in Québec you cant easily get an Ioniq EV. Hyundai announced a few weeks ago that they stopped taking orders for 2018 Ioniq EVs as they do not have enough battery supply. So you have to order a 2019 which they have not even confirmed when they will deliver in NA, let alone open the order books.
      SUCH a shame that they won’t put a 35 or 40kwh battery in the Ioniq EV and produce more than 10,000 of them globally per year, it would sell like hotcakes if they did…. but maybe they don’t really want to sell them as I doubt they are being sold at a profit at such low volume.

      1. Yes, it is a shame. An Ioniq with a 35-40 kWh useable battery would be a very practical EV.

        My estimate is that the minimum EPA range for Canada, in order to get an EV that works for most drivers (decent highway range in the winter with snow tires) is 350 km. A 40 kWh Ioniq isn’t there yet, but gets pretty close.

        Of course, even current EVs work great as second car commuters for 2 car families. Not sure why so many don’t seem to realize that.

        I’m really curious about pricing for the upcoming Kona, Niro EV, and 60kwh Leaf. Are they going to be priced high to limit sales? Available here in Canada?

        And what’s going to happen when we elect Doug Ford and he gets rid of all our environmental programs?

  8. In Sweden the Visia was not seriously offered for the old model either. The de-facto base version was the Accenta. Now for the new Leaf the N-connecta appears to be the base trim. The Accenta is not included in the private leasing offer, making it even more expensive than the N-Connecta. I have both a new Leaf (made in december 2017) and and old Leaf (made in feb 2017) on lease. Both in Accenta trim levels without options. The new one is twice the lease rate of the old one. (500 eur/month vs 250). Well worth it as the new car is twice as useful. The difference between the 24 kWh and 40 kWh is enormous. According to Leafspy the capacity of the old is 22 kWh and 38,4 kWh on the new one, i.e. 75% greater. In reality I get more like 90% better range! Exact same tyres, pressure, route and similar temperature. The new Leaf must be 5-10% more efficient. There is no other way to explain it.

  9. Price depends also of what consummers can get for that money…

    In Portugal not many choosings for 30-34KEUR… Zoe (smaller car), Smart and the Clones… nothing else… That seems a very good deal to buy a Leaf…specially bearing in mind (even with #rapidgate) the 160.000 8 year warranty.

    In Portugal a ioniq costs 40kEUR…and golf believe similar figures… now that is expensive (I bought a leaf 2.zero for below 31KEUR)! 9KEUR difference for the ioniq gives me the possibility to buy a new battery within 9/10 years time…and keep the car as second car for a more updated vehicle… those were at least my numbers 😛
