It’s not a big secret that later this year the Kia Soul EV is getting more range from a battery with more capacity. What’s still unknown is if SK innovation will remain the cell maker and how much more battery capacity will the Kia Soul EV gain.
While Kia’s sister company Hyundai is using LG Chem cells in the IONIQ EV’s batteries, it’s probable that Kia keeps using SK innovation as a cell supplier for the Soul EV.
Currently the Kia Soul EV has an EPA range of 93 miles (150 km). The battery is made with 192 SK innovation cells, that give a total battery capacity of 27 kWh.
Consulting SK innovation’s website we can see 50 Ah cells listed. This would give the 2017 Kia Soul EV’s battery a total of 36 kWh (192 x 50 Ah x 3,75 V).
If this possibility is proved correct, the 2017 Kia Soul EV is just another “me too” electric car with a similar range to the recent battery upgraded EVs. But SK innovation might surprise us.
The hybrid Kia Niro has already a plug-in hybrid version planned for 2017/2018, but a BEV version is also a possibility. The 2017 Kia Soul EV could be a test bed for the Kia Niro EV’s battery.
I hope that SK innovation can deliver a great battery since I don’t like monopolies and LG Chem already has a lot of clients for its EV batteries. The 2017 Kia Soul EV is going to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show 2016, less than two months away. Stay tuned.
