South Korea already has two big lithium cells manufacturers. LG Chem and Samsung SDI, but now SK Innovation has intentions of joining the party.
SK Innovation will supply cells to Mercedes-Benz. Those cells will be used in new electric car models starting 2017.
This may also mean that the Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive will have its battery changed. The battery is currently made by Tesla Motors with Panasonic cells.
Since SK Innovation cells are already used in the Kia Soul EV battery, it will be no surprise to see them in new electric cars from Kia and Hyundai.
It’s great to see another cell maker emerging.
