We are just a few days away from Los Angeles Auto Show, this is the best opportunity for Ford to unveil its Chevy Bolt competitor. I’m pretty confident they’ll do it.
Ford promised to show its 200 miles (320 km) electric car before the end of this year. I’ll not be surprised if Ford also announces a new bigger battery for Focus Electric as a stopgap to the new 200 miles EV. The 200 miles EV will be Ford’s first electric car built from the ground up, using a platform intended for electric cars.
Ford’s approach to electric mobility has been sloppy. They took the quick and easy route, by putting a battery in the trunk of cars that weren’t made to be electric. This made the trunk almost useless for luggage. I have noting against conversions if done right. Honda Fit EV, Fiat 500e, Volkswagen e-Up, Volkswagen e-Golf and Spark EV are examples for good electric cars that also use the same body as their gas counterparts.
The Ford Focus Electric’s battery is built with 430 NMC cells made by LG Chem, each has 15 Ah capacity. 430 x 3,7 V x 15 Ah = 23,865 kWh
If Ford decides to improve it they can use newer LG Chem cells that have higher energy density to reduce the battery size and weight, making more space for luggage and the car a bit more efficient. Or they can keep the battery with the same size and increase its capacity, giving the car more electric range. Either way, Ford should add quick charge capability with CCS.
In the next few days we’ll see how much is Ford committed to electric mobility.
