BMW C evolution gets a long range version

The range is increased from 100 km to 160 km.

Finally BMW’s electric scooter gets a long range version by using the new Samsung SDI 94 Ah cells, that replace the old 60 Ah cells.

This battery upgrade isn’t a surprise since BMW recently did the same upgrade with its electric car, the i3.

Currently the electric scooter BMW C Evolution battery is made with 36 Samsung SDI 60 Ah cells, making it 8,1 kWh (36 x 60 Ah x 3,75 V). The upgrade to 94 Ah cells will make the scooter’s battery capacity improve to 12,69 kWh. Regarding range, it means that the old 100 km range is now increased to 160 km.

Now, not only the battery is going to change in the long range variant, but also the electric motor will be more powerful.

These are the highlights:

  • Innovative electric drive via drivetrain swing arm with liquid-cooled e‑motor, tooth belt and planetary gear.

  • Significantly increased range due to enlarged battery cell capacity of 94 Ah (previously 60 Ah).

  • Long Range version: 19 kW (26 hp) continuous output and 35 kW (48 hp) peak output. Top speed 129 km/h, range approx. 160 km.

  • A1 driving licence version (Europe only): 11 kW (15 hp) continuous output and 35 kW (48 hp) peak output. Top speed 120 km/h, range approx. 100 km.

  • Intelligent recuperation in coasting mode and when braking.

  • Standard charge cable with smaller diameter.

  • Short charging times possible.

  • Synergy effects with BMW automobiles and electrical safety according to car standards.

  • Hybrid chassis with agile handling due to low centre of gravity.

  • Powerful braking system with ABS.

  • Extensive range of standard features including multifunctional TFT instrument cluster, LED daytime running light, LED turn indicators, several riding modes, reverse assist and Torque Control Assist (TCA).

  • New paint finishes Ionic Silver metallic / Electric Green.

  • High-end details such as tinted windshield and colour seat seams.

BMW will continue to sell a version with the electric motor power limited to 11 kW to comply with A1 driving licence in Europe.

BMW also adds that the electric scooter will enter new markets:

“Already available in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Ireland and China, the C evolution is now also due to be launched in the USA, Japan, South Korea and Russia.”

Only in late 2018, with the opening of the new Samsung SDI battery plant in Hungary we should see a new battery upgrade. This time the 94 Ah cells will be replaced with 120 Ah cells, it will mean a 16,2 kWh battery and a 200 km range.

The new BMW C evolution electric scooter will be shown at the upcoming Paris Motor Show 2016.
